Three different processes (cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization) are commonly referred to as “disinfection,” so it would be constructive to start by defining our terms in response to coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic circumstances. Cleaning purely reduces the number of contaminants present to achieve ISO 14644 particle level standards with class 8 as per ASHRAE and in doing so, removes a proportion of organisms present. Disinfection removes most pathogenic organisms.
